Shop / west system 205 fast hardener
The base material of the WEST SYSTEM family of products, on which all of the WEST SYSTEM compounds are built, is 105 Resin. This resin is a clear, light amber, low-viscosity liquid epoxy resin, and it is the key component in a wide variety of boat building, restoration, and repair projects. It is formulated to be used with WEST SYSTEM hardeners and can be cured in a wide temperature range to form a high-strength solid with excellent moisture resistance.
Designed specifically to wet out and bond with wood fiber, fiberglass, reinforcing fabrics, and a variety of metals, 105 Resin is an excellent adhesive that can bridge gaps and fill voids when modified with WEST SYSTEM fillers. Once cured, it can be sanded and shaped, and it has excellent thin-film characteristics for roller applications, allowing it to flow out and self-level without "fisheyeing." The resin cures clear, making it possible to achieve a natural finish when coating with varnish. It also has a relatively high flash point and no strong solvent odor, making it safer to work with than polyesters.
When using 105 Resin, it is strongly recommended to use WEST SYSTEM dispenser pumps for precise metering. In addition to 105 Resin, the 205 Fast Hardener is also a key component in a majority of situations. This medium-viscosity epoxy curing agent is used at lower temperatures to produce a rapid cure that develops its physical properties quickly at room temperature. When mixed with the 105 Resin in a five-part resin to one-part hardener ratio, the cured resin/hardener mixture yields a rigid, high-strength, moisture-resistant solid with excellent bonding and coating properties.
It is important to note that 205 Fast Hardener is not intended for clear coating. To ensure precise metering of all group sizes of WEST SYSTEM Resins and hardeners, the Mini Pump Kit is a must. The mix ratio, pot life at 72°F (22°C), cure to a solid state, cure to maximum strength, minimum recommended temperature, and pumps required are all important factors to consider when working with these products.
In addition to the 105 Resin and 205 Fast Hardener, a G/Flex 655 Resin and hardener kit is also available for repairs such as cracks, holes, scrapes, dings, and pinhole leaks in inflatable boats. This kit includes mixing sticks, syringes, mixing palettes, gloves, alcohol cleaning pans, and instructions for bonding HDPE, LDPE, ABS, PVC, and polycarbonate plastics using the 4.2 fl oz G/Flex 655 Resin and hardener.
